Kathleen also explained our dues further. Dues to Serra International include dues to USA Council and they are $46/member, twice a year (January-June and June-December) for a total of $92/year. A spouse’s dues are ½ of this per year or $46. District Governor Fees are $3/member and $1.50/spouse and are paid once a year. Region Director Fees are $2/member and $1/spouse and are paid once a year.Convention Fees are $4/member and $2/spouse and are paid once per year. We pay $101/member/year in dues and fees but less for spouses so our Club profits about $404/year on dues.
VOCATIONS REPORT—Pat gave Kim Sullivan, a Norfolk Catholic School parent who organizes their Enkindle program, materials that she can use with the kids. November is a vocations month! Marilyn talked to Fr. Scott Schilmoeller about his meetings with young men at the school and asked if they would be interested in attending one of our Serra Club meetings. He thought that it wouldn’t work out well with their schedules at this time. Marilyn suggested that we think of something special to do if they choose to come to a meeting in the future. Marilyn also asked if there is an awareness of Serra Club in our Parishes? Maybe not. People certainly love their Priests but many don’t want to attend another meeting. There is certainly potential to be a strong club. We need to reach out to new members like parents of Seminarians and women in formation. COMMUNICATIONS—Sandy Moser shared a thank you note from Seminarian Kyle Loecker for his birthday card and our support and we passed around a bookmark with his vocations story that was included in the card. She also shared thank you notes from Seminarian Luke Schmitz (birthday card and support), Fr. Patrick Moser (ordination gift and support) and Seminarian Will Targy (birthday card) and Fr. Forsell (Floersch?) (prayers and encouragement). Sandy passed around new cards for us to sign. Mary Lux reported that she received a letter from Spirit Catholic Radio asking for a donation for the Fall Care-A-Thon. Dave Lux moved that we donate $50. The motion was seconded by Ed Moser and the motion passed. PROGRAM REPORT—There was discussion about a comment at our lunch for the sisters about one of them having a program that they can give sometime. We will ask Sister RoseAnn about this when she is back from Rome. OLD BUSINESS--Sisters’ Appreciation Lunch-the event was very nice, sisters appreciated it, It was great to hear their stories and it was very worthy of our time.Sue received a thank you note from Sr. Pat from Elgin. We had no recommendations for changes in the way we did this. We will not have a regular meeting in November because of the Priest Appreciation Dinner. Dave will check with the Sisters about a social in January or February since everyone, including the sisters is so busy in December. Priest Appreciation Dinner, November 8, K of C Hall.Jerry’s Hilltop will serve prime rib and chicken.Mary Lux has learned that Archbishop Lucas may not make it because he leaves for a meeting of the USCCB the next day. Because the date isn’t far away, she will send out invitations anyway, without saying that AB Lucas will be there. She doesn’t send announcements for Parish bulletins because an invitation for this use is included with each Priest’s invitation. Please share yours with your own Parish secretary.Mary will check with Leon Gentrup about wine and about napkins and tablecloths.Members signed up to bring appetizers, Marilyn will bring plates and napkins for appetizers. We will meet at 3 to decorate. Members are encouraged to bring Fall decorations for decorations. Pat talked to Cindy Miller about having the Catholic Daughters bring desserts and having men and women there to help in the kitchen and with serving. NEW BUSINESS—none Our program was part of a video on Formed.org about Pope John XXIII whose feast day is today. Fr. Ross talked about prospective Seminarians and reminded us that God calls us as we are and that no one should try to be someone they are not. He talked about a dinner he went to with high school students at the St. John Paul II Newman Center at UNO and told us that that the Chapel there is made of limestone because St. John Paul II mined limestone in Poland before becoming a Priest. TREASURER’S REPORT—by Kathleen O’Brien Beginning balance--$7,827.87 Ending balance-- 6,585.87 Expenditures for Serra International membership dues-----1,242.00 Kathleen shared a letter from Margaret Korth Bloomquist along with her current dues And stated that she will no longer be an active member. Currently, we pay a membership fee to the International--$22.50 twice per year, per member; membership fee to the Region--$3.00 per year. We currently have invoice for the convention from the District Governor--$3.00 per member, $1.50 per spouse and for the Region Director of $2.00 per member. Ivan had some questions about the cost of our dues paid out and the amount of money that we pay. Kathleen explained that we get some donations and we also have money from the Mary Movie project. Because of recent changes in the dues structure from these places and for clarification, Kathleen will bring more information to share with everyone at our next meeting. Dr. Lux also reminded us that some of our dues money is donated to the missions. MEMBERSHIP REPORT—Marilyn reported that she had talked with Deacon Bill about a group of seminarians who had met with some young people who expressed some interest in the seminary. She will talk again with Dr. Ridder about appropriate vocation prayers and crosses in the school. COMMUNICATIONS—Mary Van Dyke reported that three of the sisters’ invitations had been returned. She checked and found that one of the sisters had died and the other two are in nursing homes. Sister Patricia Hoffman sent in her reservation. She was directed to send invitations to Paul and LaNeta Abler, Clint and Sheila Schukei, and Anne Wilber. OLD BUSINESS—Ivan reported that he had talked to Sister Gabrielle Marie about the menu. She indicated that the sisters would love Swiss steak. We passed around several recipes for Swiss steak and chose the one for Elegant Oven Swiss Steak. Ivan volunteered Mary to prepare the steak for the appreciation brunch. Nancy Schaecher will prepare the mashed potatoes. Nancy Rice will make a fruit salad. The Luxes will bring the green bean dish. Kathleen will bring dinner rolls, and Ree Riley will bring butter. Pat Schmit will provide the peach dessert. Mary should make name tags for all the members of the Serra Club. Everyone should bring nice cloth napkins with fall designs for the meal. Ivan volunteered to bring wine. Because of the brunch, it was decided to not have a regular meeting in September. Mary Lux announced that we will meet in the Cenacle Room (upstairs) for the October meeting. Mary Lux opened discussion about the Priests Appreciation Dinner on November 8, at the K of C Hall. Jerry’s Hilltop will serve prime rib and chicken. We should all come up with something for the raffle. We’ll also have a 50/50 pot. We will again be responsible for bringing appetizers. Mary Lux will talk to Fr. Neils about being the speaker. NEW BUSINESS—Kathleen read a letter about our dues structure. People from Omaha are doing a survey to see how each individual club handles their dues and what bnefits are included in them. Ivan moved to adjourn. Nancy Schaecher seconded that. Marilyn will talk to Father Scott to see if his group of young people would be interested in coming to a meeting.She reminded us that we welcome ALL priests—no matter what diocese they are serving in. Ivan will talk to Clint and Sheila Schukei. Mary Van Dyke stated that she has already talked to the Podliskas about joining, but they are not ready just yet. COMMUNICATIONS—Sue Weeder reported that Bob Campney sent some suggestions on getting new members and retaining old members.We will l look at these at a later date. Mary Lux reminded us that we need to continue to pray.She will send our I intentions to Spirit Catholic Radio. OLD BUSINESS—Sue congratulated Father on winning the Priests ballgame. The date of the Priests’ Appreciation dinner is November 8, 2018. Jerry’s Hilltop will cater it.The K of C Hall has been reserved. Father suggested we contact Father Patrick Neals, from Neligh about speaking that evening.Paul Weeder will talk to him.
Nancy Schaecher asked us to pray for Father Mike Malloy because he fell while in Boston and broke his hip.He is now at home and recuperating nicely.
Father Burkhalter talked about the successful ballgame in Omaha.The Omaha Archdiocese got a priest from Grand Island and that really helped them to be the winners this year. He said the priests really love the crowd who loves to put their faith on display.It was just about having fun except for one bad call by one umpire!There was about 4,500 to 5,000 people in attendance.They generally make about $25,000., but he wasn’t sure how much they made this year.The money goes to the seminarian fund.The only problem is that they just can’t seem to escape injuries.
Sue Weeder said that she thought it was so neat when, after the game, all of the priests gathered around the pitcher’s mound and sang “Salve Regina.”

Sue Weeder reported that there will not be a seminarians’ picnic this summer. Sue Weeder passed out a sheet of the summer assignments for the Seminarians of the Archdiocese of Omaha. It was reported that the Mosers were absent because they were celebrating her Mother’s 100th birthday, that the church was comfortably full for Father Moser’s First Holy Mass and that the Cathedral was “filled to capacity” at the Ordination.
OLD BUSINESS—Sue stated that we’ll plan for the Sister’s Brunch at next month’s meeting. The brunch will be held at 11:00 AM, but the Christmas party for the Sisters will be at our regular meeting date and time. Mary Lux said the K of C Hall is reserved for the Priests’ Appreciation Dinner on Thursday. November 8, 2018.The Archbishop knows about the date already. Jerry Schmit will call Jerry’s Hilltop to make arrangement with them. We prayed the Prayer of Saint Ignatius Loyola Father Burkhalter prayed a prayer for us. Bob Campney gave an interesting talk: ~Passed out a few copies of the Nine-Day Novena to Saint Junipero Serra-which should be prayed on June 23-July 1 (which is his feast day). ~Recommended several books: To Save a Thousand Souls by Fr. Brett Brannen A Priest in the The Family by Father Brett Brannen Adopt a Seminarian put out by SPARK A Hundred Fold—A guide to parish vocations ministry by Rhonda Gruenewald ~We can go to the website, usaserra.com to get materials.The president of USA Serra, Greg Sweitz, gets books out from “Always Forward.”Mike Downey has a “New Orientation of New Members.” ~The spirit of Pope Francis’ July speech was, “Serrans are friends.” ~Posed the question, ”What do we want from this club?” and discussion followed. Ivan Van Dyke stated he thought we should set a goal of recruiting five young seminarians in the next five years.To do this he suggested a more active membership, getting members to become more interactive with seminarians. Other comments were that wecurrently send birthday cards.We could send Christmas and Easter cards and perhaps send a little spending money in the cards.Perhaps each member could adopt a seminarian.We could follow up with the young men after they attend J.C.Camp. ~We were challenged to think about new activities in the next 30 days. ~Father Burkhalter reminded us to pray for our priests because they face many unforeseen challenges that threaten their priestly life. COMMITTEE REPORTS Membership—No report. Vocations—Ree Riley reported that her nephew, Dan Fitzgerald is discerning and needs prayers.Kathleen O’Brien reported her nephew, Tony Schukei, graduated from St. Gregory the Great Seminary and plans to sell his house and car this summer.He will be going to St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Philadelphia this fall. Peyton Kerkman is discerning and will be attending Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas. She was awarded the $500. Scholarship from the Fourth Degree Kof C and a scholarship from the deanery. Pat Schmit will talk to Dr. Ritter about putting plaques and prayers in the grade school. Linda Kerkman reported that Sherry Veik and Karen Eisheid are starting a camp (similar to Camp Kateri) for area youth. Communications—We had a thank you note from Thomas Matteya. Three summer birthday cards were signed by everyone for the seminarians. A letter from the director of Spirit Catholic radio was read. Mary Lux will send in a request for our prayer intentions Mary Lux will contact the Archbishop’s office to set up the priests’ appreciation dinner.
OLD BUSINESS—There may be a bus going to the ordination on June 2.Call the parish office in Clearwater to make reservations. Linda Kerkman reported Bob Campney (District governor) and Bill Stoll will be here to install officers at the June meeting. Sue Weeder reported the the Sisters’ Brunch will be Saturday, September 8, at the monastery. We discussed making breakfast dishes, but decided to table the plan until the August meeting
NEW BUSINESS—Mary Lux asked for help with the Donut Sunday on May 20th. Mary Van Dyke will make name tags for that and other events so that people will be more aware of the Serrans.We will set up a table for the Donut Sunday.Pat Schmit will bring some brochures and Mary Lux will try to get some from the Serra Club Office. Mary Lux said we will meet in the Cenacle Room for two months because of the Following Christ meetings. Sue Weeder plans for the Seminarians’ picnic to be after July 1. Gifts for the newly ordained seminarians were discussed and it was decided to have Father Ross Burkhalter say Holy Masses for each of them. Sue Weeder reported that she would send invitations to the parents of the area seminarians, to join theNorfolk Area Serra Club.
PROGRAM—Dr. Lux read the reading for Ascension Thursday from The Acts of the Apostles. He then introduced the Holy Spirit Novena and we prayed Day 1 together. Sue Weeder reminded us to pray for our seminarians and their parents. Pat Schmit asked us to pray for her brother, George. Jerry Schmit reminded us to pray for Bishop Mahoney who is in hospice now.

Treasurer’s report:Bills paid during the past month were $500 for Sacred Heart trip to St. John Vianney Seminary, $132.14 for the Priest Appreciation Dinner, $64.65 for pizza for the February meeting, and $27.58 for Birthday cards and postage for seminarians. Deposits totaled$75 for memorials received. Ending balance was $5921.12. Committee reports:No new reports for Membership or Communications committees. Vocations:Helped sponsor High Schooltrip to St. John Vianney Seminary led by Fr. Scott Schilmoeller. Program:Dave Lux reported on the Seminary trip that five high school age boys and four sponsors took to St John Vianneyin St. Paul, MN.They toured the campus and participated in several times of prayer and Mass with the seminarians.Impressions were that the seminarians pray a lot, but that they have a very joyful presence about them. It was mentioned that the National Serran Convention begins April 28 in Nashville, TN if anyone would like to attend. Old Business: Kristi Steffen declined to accept the office of President Elect, so someone is still needed to fill that office.We will still plan to have induction of new officers at the June meeting. Outgoing District Governor, Bob Campney will attend. The new District governor, Bill Stoll, may also attend. The Spring Leadership Session will be held on Friday, April 20, from 3 P.M. to 7 P.M. in Fremont.Our club will possibly have 6 members present. Sue Weeder spoke to Sr. Rose Ann at Immaculata Convent regarding our desire to have an appreciation meal for them.They tentatively set a date of Saturday, September 8, which is the Feast of Mary’s Birth.We could plan a brunch at 11:30 A.M. and then join the Sisters for their Noon Prayer.We will discuss this more at future meetings. New Business: We will plan to hold the PriestAppreciation Dinner as usual on the second Thursday of November.Mary Lux will contact the Archbishop’s Secretary to see if he is available on that date. Fr. Roza will also be contacted to find available dates for the Seminarian Picnic this summer. Sue was contacted to see if we wanted to purchase an Archdiocesan Directory. Because most parishes have them, it was decided not to purchase one. As of yet, no buses are planned for transportation to Ordination on June 2.We may have to carpool if necessary. Fr. Burkhalter shared some thoughts on Pope Francis’s Encyclical on Holiness. Pope Francis stressed that the Devil is not a myth—that evil is a reality in our world.He wants to make sure that we know that holiness is not beyond us, and that we can be what God intends us to be. God’s grace helps us achieve holiness in our lives. Meeting was closed with the Prayer for Perseverance. New Business: Spring Leadership Sessionwill be Friday April 20 from 3:00 to 7:00 PM @ St. Patrick’s Church in Fremont. This is intended for all current officers, newly elected officers, trustees and anyone else interested. Bob Campney will attend our June meeting for induction of new officers. NORFOLK AREA SERRA CLUB Minutes of February 8, 2018 meeting Roll Call: Present: Fr. Scott Schimoller, Paul and Sue Weeder, Ed and Sandy Moser, Dave Lux, Nancy Wright, Kathleen O”Brien, Linda Kerkman. Meeting was opened with Serra Prayer. Secretary’s report available on website (Norfolkareaserra.weebly.com) Treasurer’s report VP reports: Membership: Currently have 31 paid members, notices will be sent out again by Treasurer. Vocations/Program: Fr. Scott Schimoler was present to talk about the planned visit to take 10 young men for the Norfolk area and Wayne Focus group to Kendrick Seminary in St. Louis. About $1500 is needed. It was moved and seconded to give $500 toward the goal and advised to seek out the Knights of Columbus. Trip scheduled for March 10-12 Communications: Thank you received from Collin and Monica Kathol for the $200 donation sent to their daughter, DeVon, who has entered a religious order after paying off college debt. Birthdays for seminarians were sent around for signature Old Business: The idea of doing a brunch for the Sisters in the area was discussed. It was decided to wait until warmer weather and for Sr. Rosann to settle in. Sue Weeder will talk with Sr. Rosann about the plan. New Business: Serran Server Awards will be held in Wayne, April 10th by Kristi Steffen and Ewing February 28, by Linda Kerkman and Ed and Sandy Moser. Both will have Mass at 7:00PM. Candidates are asked to come at 6:00 PM Vocation Summit was canceled; instead planning a Lenten retreat at Christ the King parish in Omaha Spring Leadership meeting will be Friday, April 20, 3-7 pm in Fremont. Officers and VP’s are expected to attend. New officers for 2018: Dave Lux, nominating committee, will look to fill the slate. Ross Burkhalter, Sue Weeder, Dave & Mary Lux, Jerry & Pat Schmitt, Linda Kerkman, Nancy Rice, Sandy Moser, Ree Riley, Marilyn Kathol, Nancy Schaecher, Rod Weibelhaus and guest Speaker, Sr. Carol Ann, OSB. Attendance is low because of the “Discovering Jesus” series that is going on at Sacred Heart Parish and members are attending. Meeting opened with Serrans prayer led by President, Sue Weeder. Secretary report was read and approved. Treasurer’s report: Balance $7,559.24 Expense: $200 to Focus missionary, Devon Kathol. Closing balance: $7,359.24 Committee reports: Membership: Kathleen O’Brien not present to report on memberships paid. Vocations: Mel Spader, no report Communications: no report Program: Sister Carol Ann was our guest speaker, who led us through a meditation on Joseph, Mary, Elizabeth and Zachariah. Unfinished Business: Pastors Appreciation Dinner: Invites were handed out to those members present and will be sent to priests, seminarian parents and Serra members. Napkins and tablecloths will be gotten through Appeara. Appetizers: from Rod Weibelhaus, Nancy Rice, Nancy Schaecher, Linda Kerkman and Sue Weeder. Registration table: Marilyn Kathol and Sandy Moser. Raffle: Ree Riley and Mary Lux. Raffle items: Beth Gentrup, Kathy Steffensmeier, Marilyn Kathol, Sandy Moser, Sue Weeder and Dave Lux. Number of registration need to be called to Hilltop by November 2nd. Nancy Rice will get appetizer plates and napkins. Beth Gentrup will be asked to print nametags. Desserts will be provided by Catholic Daughters along with help serving. We will decorate November 9th at 3:30pm at the KC Hall in Norfolk. Members were asked to bring fall décor to use on the tables. New Business: Region 9 convention is October 20-22 in Omaha. Four from our club are registered. Kathleen O’Brien, Anne Wilbur, See Weeder and Linda Kerkman. Friday, December 15th at 7 PM our Serra club will meet at the convent for a fun night of treats and games with the Sisters. Serrans are asked to bring food items. Sr Carol Ann asked for prayers for a retreat she is giving this weekend. Rod Wiebelhaus recently toured the seminary in St. Louis with Fr. Hoesing and recommended it to all. Fr. Ross spoke about Fatima and the 100th Anniversary of the Miracle of the Sun. He included the less known apparitions of blessings from St. Joseph and the Child Jesus, of Mary and of Christ blessing the world. The Fatima message is one of penance and prayer.. Old Business: New Business: Priests Appreciation Dinner: Much discussion was held who would be included in the invites; current members, recent seminarian parents who have attended meetings will be invited. Father Ross remarked that the intent was for the priests to be able to gather for sharing and a meal. We also discussed getting napkins and tablecloths from Appeara. Ree Riley will be in charge of the raffle. And will also have a 50/50 split the pot. Jerry’s Hilltop will cater the meal. We discussed the price of the meal and decided to let the price at $20 and make up any deficit with the raffles. Further decisions for dessert, appetizers and decorations will be made at the October meeting. Sisters’ Appreciation: It was discussed what we could do to show the Sisters our appreciation. It was mentioned inviting them to the PAD. A brunch at the convent was offered as an option. If held at the convent then all the Sisters would be able to attend. This will be discussed further at later meeting. Clergy Conference October 2nd will be held at St. Mary’s Church. Fr. James Mallon, author of Divine Renovation, will be the guest speaker. Some laity who has been involved with the Pastoral Planning Teams has also been invited to attend. We have been asked for prayers for the graces to be received. Father Ross spoke about suffering in our world and the Catholic view of the value of suffering united with the suffering of Christ. Due to conflict in scheduling, the October meeting will be in the school cafeteria. Mass will be in the Oratory as usual at 7 PM. Next meeting: October 12th at St. Mary’s. This year it was held at the parish center with many comments about how nice the evening atmosphere was at the parish center. This year Sue Weeder invited the parents of the local seminarians and the members of the Missionary Benedictines who are in formation but they were out of town. We plan to invite the same next year and to invite area priests to bring a young person along who may be discerning a religious vocation. Cost for supplies of cream can supper was $81. Members brought salads, desserts and breads. Topic Night: Possible November 12th. New Business: Priests Appreciation Supper: Linda has sent a request to Linda Thomsen regarding the date for the Priest Appreciation Dinner. When it is confirmed, Linda will notify members so Hilltop Café can be called and the KC Hall confirmed. Dave Lux proposed inviting Fr. Scott Schimoeller to speak. Fall Clergy Conference will be Oct 2-3 at Divots Fr. James Mallon, author of Divine Renovation, will speak on October 3rd. We have been invited to seen 3-5 members.
